The Re-Education of Mancuso

I’m helping Dave to overcome some of his, well, issues. He had four Pepsi caps’ worth of credit stored up in iTunes, and he asked me to help him choose the songs. I took the opportunity to address his problems as well.

His music library now includes:
1. Dope Nose by Weezer from the album Maladroit
2. (They Long To Be) Close To You by Barenaked Ladies from the album One Amazing Night
3. Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head by Ben Folds Five from the album One Amazing Night
4. All That That Implies by Michael Penn from the album Resigned

I feel better about this already.

Following Up…

Jen really disliked the bass line, but not because of its MIDI-ness. The sound was actually quite convincing. Software instruments have come a long way.

She didn’t feel that the bass line fit well with the guitar line. And she’s right. Which is why it was only ever temporary to begin with.

We’re going to try to record her actual bass line (the one she wrote) this weekend. Hopefully we’ll be able to record the full song, except for vocals. I still need a mic cable or two for that.

Busy weekend, come to think of it. Friday night (which is actually later today at this point) is our non-Valentine Party. Saturday I want to finish up the Frequency 1.6 docs and revamp the Frequency website (now on bradrhine.com — have I mentioned that?). And I’m hoping to add a validating Atom 0.3 feed to tangelo as well.

Let’s Try This Again

I did some tweaking to the song I posted a few days ago. I replaced the abominable lead guitar track with something that’s slightly more passable. I also changed the effects on it and added a bass line. Don’t tell Jen that I used a MIDI bass line. It’s only temporary – she’ll record the final bass line.

You can listen to it here.

To Answer Dave’s Questions

1. What is your favorite word?
tangelo
It even looks nice.

2. What is your least favorite word?
Irregardless.
Although technically, it’s not a word! Bill, I’m looking in your direction.

3. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Seeing people respond positively to work that I’ve done.

4. What turns you off?
Stupidity. And arrogance.

5. What is your favorite curse word?
Frickin’
Which isn’t much of a curse word, I know, but I’m trying not to swear anymore. If I had to pick a real curse word, well, let’s just say it rhymes with bunt. Nasty word.

6. What sound or noise do you love?
The sound of my daughter sleeping or singing.

7. What sound or noise do you hate?
Oboe. It’s just nasty.

8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Musician.

9. What profession would you not like to do?
Aside from my current one?
I guess professional wrestling.

10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Put Up Or Shut Up

Seems that REAL Software has invited the illustrious Ladd of Perversion Tracker fame to give a session on good software design techniques at REAL World 2004. Beautiful. Whoever came up with this idea is a genius.

I’ll be at the conference, by the way. I can’t wait. There are many people I’m anxious to meet face-to-face that I’ve only ever known over the Internet.

Opening the Doors

bradrhine.com is open for business.

Literally.

Of particular note is the news section. It’s powered by a very rough, very early, very not-even-alpha version of tangelo.

Here’s my favorite part, though: the HTML, CSS, and RSS feed all validate. And the RSS feed validates with Mark Pilgrim’s validator and Userland’s validator, so I know it’s right. An Atom 0.3 feed is next, but probably not this week.

Validation is very important to me for tangelo. I think it’s vital that tangelo writes out only valid HTML, CSS, and RSS (and soon Atom). Of course, people could always enter invalid stuff into a post, but I love that the app is writing code in accordance with web standards. This is a big deal.

Go ahead and subscribe to that feed if you want to stay updated on tangelo and Frequency developments.

Tidal Wave of Morons

I rarely, if ever, read Kuro5hin, because it’s annoying, but Gadgetopia had a link to this post, and it’s just too funny not to link to: In the past, blogging was an interesting pastime. Now, with the advent of the ridiculously popular weblog package Movable Type, the Web is in risk of drowning under a tidal wave of morons who throttle search engines with writing that has no purpose and such PageRank-destroying features as “TrackBack”.

Sums it up pretty well, don’t you think?

In the interest of full disclosure, I do, of course, run this weblog on Movable Type, although I am migrating it to Tangelo within the next few months.

I Myst You So

According to MacCentral, Uru: Ages Beyond Myst is coming to the Mac.

I can barely contain my excitement.

I played the first Myst for, like, ten minutes before I became hopelessly bored and annoyed with it.

This would be part four, I believe, in the series. First, there was Myst, which sucked. Then there was Riven, which I never played, but I can state with certainty that it also sucked. And then, after a long and peaceful slumber, the series was refreshed with Myst III: Exile. Myst III: Exile sucked.

So, what’s my prediction for Uru: Ages Beyond Myst?

I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict a suckitude level of 13.

Out of 10.
